In addition to my quest for the best porchetta we’re also searching out the best bruchetta (OK we’re just searching for good food in general). We may have found it here in Bologna at Taverna del Postilione. We saw it on the menu and thought “10 euro! – yikes that’s expensive for an antipasti” – fortunately we decided to try it any way. Basically they give you tons of toasted bread (crostini) and what they called salsas. What you see is (Clockwise starting at 6): cheese, eggplant, red pepper, tonno (tuna in mayo), and artichoke. We’d already eaten about 2 crostini each by the time this picture was taken (we were hungry from a long train ride with one sandwich split between us and the fact restaurants don’t open in Bologna until 7:30 or 8:00 pm). You simply slather on the salsa and eat away. Every one of these was amazing and so was the bread. The portions were huge (In this case they had both quality and quantity).
After eating all the bread you see in the picture we still had 3/4 of the salsa’s left and they asked if we wanted more bread. As we’d already ordered pasta we turned them down (they seemed quite surprised – apparently not many people turn them down). The lesson here is 1) Go here and order this and 2) order nothing else (OK maybe wine – we got half a liter of the house red – Sangiovese - which was excellent) and you’ll get a huge meal for up to 4 people for 20 euros.
