One thing I can’t adequately describe is the sounds we hear in each city. We are a block off of Piazza Maggiore where the big cathedral is in Bologna. Right now in the piazza there’s a Greek band playing something atonal, a sax quartet playing “In the mood” – (For John C. - they’re not bad) , and a German guy with an electric guitar and a beat box all rigged up through amps on the back of his Harley – he’s rapping very badly in English with a thick German accent (imagine the Governator doing Snoop Dogg). Down the street from our hotel there’s a guy playing classical guitar as well as anyone I’ve ever heard. All this is surrounded by a waxing and waning din of traffic; people talking, laughing, and arguing; and the occasional high pitched buzzing of the vespas weaving in and out of the pedestrians on the piazza. Sitting here in our hotel room on the fourth floor (see post about stairs) in the dark you can pick out each sound individually or just enjoy the totality. Again – this post doesn’t do it justice but it’s something I wanted to let you all know about and thought it might add further dimension to the description of our travel.
