Pompeii is big...

I mean really big. Unimaginably big. Television shows don't do it justice. The ruins are probably 4 square miles. The city had running water, a sewer system, several temples, and self cleaning streets (the streets would flood washing away what ever was in them).

Kind of puts things in perspective that a civilization bigger than the community I live in could be wiped out in a matter of minutes.

We are off to Orvieto tomorrow. We've got our train tickets and will have an early morning but we should be in Orvieto by 3 pm our time (US west coast time 6 in athe AM). We take the circumvisuvia line, a small regional railway, into Naples and from Naples we go directly to Orvieto on Trenitalia. I was able to find a train that bypassed Rome.

We're having some foul up with using our debit card so I'm hoarding cash right now. We're trying to reach the bank as I type (well Carolyn is). If I call begging for money....

Had a great dinner. We went back to the place we had pizza the first night. I ened up with a lemon risotto with swordfish and Fran had Carbonara. This wasn't in any of the books but did meet Ken's rules for choosing a restaraunt in a foreign county. When I get to post back entries that are on my netbook those of you unfamiliar with the rules will learn. Honestly it was the best food we've had here.

Still adjusting to the time change. The hotel we are in (Mignon in Sorrento) has tiled floors and no rugs. You can hear the guy down the hall taking a...well you get the idea. It's been hard to sleep and both of us are a bit like zombies. We know the hotel in Orvieto and it's quiet and accomdating, Trav and Kelsey this is the same one we stayed in in 2005. Hopefully the jet lag will wear off there.

That's it for now.
