The Rules for Eating - A Consolidated Guide

I’ve talked a lot about the rules for finding places to eat. I thought I’d round up the rules and put them in one place.  Here’s the 2023 list:

1. No more than 10 tables in the place, you may need to make exceptions in big cities but look carefully

2. Menu is hand written and in one language (in this trips case Italian) -- corollary: menu written in chalk on the side of the building is best

3. No french fries on the menu (at least not in Italy. France, Belgium, or Great Britain - OK)

4. The fewer items on the menu the better, don’t hit places with 50 dishes on the menu

5. It’s best if the menu changes seasonally or daily based on what is in season/fresh

6. If there are no locals eating there don't bother

7. Don't buy pizza from a place without a wood fired oven

8. Having to call or text for reservations is pretty safe, using an app (ahem Yelp/Fork) almost guarantees lots of tourists/Americans

9. In Italy, Don't drink coffee with milk (even a macchiato) after noon

10. If it's recommended on Yelp, Fork, TripAdvisor, Rick Steves, Lonely Planet, etc it's probably a bad idea. There may be exceptions but they are rare

11. If it’s on the grand canal or the main piazza/plaza it’s going to cost more and likely won’t be as good, find a place in the back alley
