Today is a rail strike so we came into Cambridge a day before we’d originally planned. Rail strike is an interesting story - basically the Conservative Party here in the UK was going to hold a gathering in Manchester, to make it hard on them the rail (I’m assuming both union and management) decided to strike on the days they’d need the train to get to and from Manchester (Sept 30 and Oct 4).
Cambridge is a weird university town. Too many bikes (bikes seem to have precedent over walkers), lots of “kids” (under 21), and lots of professors (crazy grey haired old people in cheap suits).
Had a meal in the lounge of the hotel yesterday which was OK (5-6/10). There was a great ham terrine, Fran had a burger (too finely minced and over cooked), and I had a pork chop (slightly tough and the pork flavor wasn’t the best I’ve had here in the UK). Again we’re picky, admittedly, but a little more effort would have gone a long way. We’re actually going to try their fancier restaurant (the Terrace) tomorrow (it wasn’t open yesterday). It’s got some accolades but we’ll see.
One of the main reasons we came to Cambridge is to eat some of what Daniel Clifford cooks. Heading to his world renowned restaurant today, called Midsummer House. Will let you know the results.
Took a nice walk along the Cam today in fairly warm weather and took a few pictures:
