Best restaurant in Wolfeboro NH

Great people and good food make this a must eat place in Wolfeboro. Upscale tavern food with specials and reasonible drink prices. The thing that made this place was the staff - what a crew. Owner Rob has a goldmine. He's changed the pattern from the other stuffy old resort restaurants. There's a business lesson for all of us in this.

It's fall in Wolfeboro

The weather is starting to turn (though tomorrow is supposed to be in the mid 60's). It's cold and the air smells like fall. Wolfeboro and Lake Winnipesaukee are a resort community in the off season. Lazy and asleep. In some way's it's nice - having the place to ourselves. In other ways it's not so nice - having restaurants closed. Though these New England towns are cute I think we're both ready to head home - they are starting to look alike. Not only that the electric toothbrush has run out of charge - we're using the old manual methods. Sigh - a little homesick this morning I guess.  I'll get over it by lunch.

More on lunch in Newburyport

Lunch

The tavern

And some of the town

Newburyport and Dunkin Donuts

Stopped for lunch on our way to NH. Newburyport is a cute town with lots of good eats. Next trip I'd plan a day here.

Also on my cousins recommendation we tried Dunkin Donuts coffee. Without a doubt it's the worst ever.

Off to New Hampshire and the colors

We spent three great days on the Cape. Loved our hotel (the Carriage House) in Chatham and highly recommend it.

We're off to New Hampshire. We'll be staying at Wentworth by the Sea (it's a newly renovated resort). We'll write more when we get there.

Too bad about them Yankees getting in the series.

Best Meal on The Cape

Was at "Pisces" in Chatham.

Consisted of:

A variation on caprese salad

Calamari with micro greens

Lobster Ravioli with a cream sauce

Penne with shrimp, asparagus, procuttio, and peas in a cream sauce

And as noted in the post blow a "Tres Leche" (three milk) cake - definitely going to make this one at home.

We ate here on Saturday night - unfortunately the last night of the season. They are open again in April. Go here.

Last night (Sunday) we ate at the Impudent Oyster. It was OK (I had the seafood stew and Fran had the surf and turf). It was over priced ($100 plus w/o wine) for the quality of food (it's no better than most chain restaurants). Pisces has 20 times better food (and it's less expensive. Pisces was around $100 with a decent half bottle of Chardonnay).

So foodies: Wait till April and go to Pisces.

Chatham and Provincetown

Some pictures from our trip to Provincetown and Chatham

Here's the inn we stayed at. It's owned by Paula and Tim Miller. Tim's brother Scott was the King 5 environmental reporter in Seattle a few years ago (he's since moved on). This was a great place and I highly recommend it.

This is the pilgrim monument in Provincetown

Looking up the tower

View from the top - somewhere out there is Boston

And back down again

In provincetown

A pic or two from this colorful place

Misc thoughts and agenda.

Off to Provincetown for the day.

I think we're headed to Portsmouth NH tomorrow for a few days...but as always we're playing it by ear.

We're staying at the Carriage House Inn. I highly recommend it. Cute, quaint, friendly, reasonably priced, and well located. Would definitely stay here again. Will follow up with some pics soon.

Around Towns

Just a quick observations. Most quaint US towns (Chatham and Newport for example) are filled with shops containing merchandise that clutters our lives. I guess this is what the tourists want and the shop keepers are just trying to make a living. Still it seems every small town pushes the same brick-a-brack (perhaps the names change on the t-shirts). I'd like to see some shops that actually sell stuff that helps us with our living rather than fills our lives with stuff.

Last Dinner in Newport

So we ate at Mamma Luisa Italian Restaurant for our last dinner in Newport. The website is here. I reviewed this on urbanspoon but in a nutshell the owner is from Bologna, home of the slow food movement. He tries to emulate the style and approach to food he grew up with in Bologna and mostly succeeds. That said I'm not sure the Newport supports the fresh and organic produce necessary to really carry this off well all the time.

One thing he did succeed with was the 'bombette' (don't say it going through TSA)

It's a kind of gnocchi but it's made only with ricotta and spinach (obviously with a tomato sauce and arugula). These are amazing - never had a non-potato gnocchi but I'm defiantly going to try and make this.

Here's the rating on the rest of the meal:

Appetizer:
Fran - procuttio and melon (Great)
Ken - carpaccio (Good - dump the button mushrooms)

Pasta: See above

Secondi:
Fran - Steak (Good)
Ken - Special of the Day - Breaded Lamb Chops (Meh - dump the breading)

Wine:
Il Nero Di Casanova 2005 (sangiovese) EXCELLENT

I seem like I'm being hard on them. They are the most Italian restaurant we've eaten at on this trip to date and by far the best. It's just that when you compare yourself to Bologna you live up to a standard that's really hard to attain in the States. For real Italian places I give them a 3.5 out of 5. For Italian places in the US I give them a 5 out of 5.

Flo's Clam Shack in Newport

You gotta love these kinds of places. All you can eat crab for $12.95.

The crab was fresh and succulent. Between us we ate three big plates - this is a must visit if you got to Newport but be aware the all you can eat is only Thursday night.
