Increased Police Presence

We were stopped by a police officer in at the entrance to the Sanremo train station. He checked our ID’s (Passports).  Asked us where we are from (Oh…Washington DC…No the other Washington). But, I think, the real reason he stopped us was to warn us of luggage theft. He seemed extra concerned about this once he found out we were headed to France in general and Nice in particular. In broken English (and great Italian) he told us watch to watch our bags carefully. We thanked him and said we’d be extra careful.

We did keep our bags close, but we really didn’t have a choice. We were on one of those French regional trains that didn’t have much overhead space. We were fortunate enough to find a four seat configuration so our bags took two seats and we took two. We noticed an increased police presence at train stations. At one station, a few stops from Nice, they even boarded the train and walked through. Fran counted nine police at that station total.

We’ve also seen an increased number of police in Nice. It’s by no means a hell hole here - we’ve experience no crime (other than drink and food prices in France) but there’s apparently something going on in the world. More folks seem to be demanding increasing police protection. Somehow this makes me feel less, not more, safe.
