Ok before I go into too much detail let me first state we climbed 379 steps to the old watch tower over Nice and walked a good 4 miles before we had Moules (Mussels) for lunch. I say this because I probably consumed 2000 calories in mussels today and I don't want you worring about me getting fat.
The restaurant was call “La Festival de la Moule” – how could we turn it down?
All you can eat 13.90 Euros – mmmm all you can eat. So I ordered a bucket natural. Just steamed mussels and lemon. See the picture below. The mussels were like butter here – no grit, no fishy taste. Fresh and delicious. Those are some frittes (French Fries) on the right and calamari (Fran had it when she wasn’t eating my mussels) in the background.
You can’t quite see it but this bucket holds about 70 mussels. So I’m about two thirds through my first bucket and slowing down. The restaurant owner comes over and says “Those must be getting cold – I’ll get you some new ones”. He picks up the rest of my mussels and runs off. Five minutes later he brings a new batch covered with Roquefort cheese. He says “These are my favorite”. Here they are:
He tried this on me a third time but after 100 or so mussels I was pretty full and insisted I’d had enough. The place has mussels in 20 different sauces and if I were here longer I’d go back every day until I’d tried them all. Fun place, great food, and a fun staff. This place is at 20 cours Saleya in Nice – if you are ever here don’t miss this. If you hate seafood you’ll love this. It’s got a goofy circus like tent awning and equally goofy atmosphere but man they are serious about mussels – probably the best I’ve had anywhere. Ever.
Zum: The frittes weren’t bad either.
