A Walk in the English Countryside

Here's a few pictures from our walk along the Avon and Kennet canals.  If you don't know the UK is crisscrossed by a bunch of old commerce canals (waterways) that are now used mostly for recreation.  The UK also has a bunch of hiking trails, they even cross private property and you have the right to cross,  at Bath the trails and canals meet for a long ways.  There's a loop starting and ending in Bath.

The locks on the canals are all manual.  I'd of helped but my hands were full of camera.

Lots of these little barges moving up and down the canals.

The best part for us was some of the homes and gardens along the walk.

More homes and gardens.

Lots of people apparently live on the barges.  Here they are growing tomatoes and herbs on their deck.

The walk continues long after the "end" (Sydney garden).  I suspect trails follow the canal all throughout the UK.  We found this panorama about a mile out from Sydney Gardens.

Going through Bath there are lots of tunnels to allow roads overhead.

The boaters were very friendly.  They are moving slow so as you are walking they'll chat with you.

The walk turns in Sydney Gardens.  A beautiful park on the outskirts of Bath.

And returns to the Pulteney Bridge.  A total of about five miles.

And fortunately it ends near the Boater pub in Pulteney because this is thirsty work!

  1. What a beautiful place! The buildings look like castles, and had no idea there were so many canals. Sounds like a wonderful, if rest(less) trip so far. So glad you are able to post pictures...I probably couldn't eat most of the food, but would love the castles and walking! Miss you, but have fun for us, too. See you in a few weeks! Love you.
