Brighton Photos

A few photos around, and comments about, Brighton

Of course we’ll start with the legendary Brighton peer.

And the wonderful sea front loaded with corny gimmicks and touristy arcades. If you’re not a connoisseur of seafront towns shame on you. The shops and chaos are truly delightful.

Probably the most touristy thing we’ve done here is tour the palace of George the IV. It was sort of built as an exercise in hedonism with George trying to replicate an Indian palace on the outside and a Chinese palace on the inside. This is the only royal palace ever sold off (to the Brighton municipality). Both Fran and I agreed it was worth a visit as palaces go.

The town during the day is quite charming. The Bath Arms above is in the middle of a bunch of maze like streets call “The Lanes”, as are most of the really good restaurants in town. The Bath Arms had Spitfire Ale on Cask - The greatest beer ever. Brighton is also beautiful by night and we couldn’t resist snapping a lot of photos. The town has gotten a little rougher around the edges since we were last here, homelessness being more noticeable, but we haven’t felt unsafe even at night.
We ran across our old friend too (the England Cost Path goes through Brighton to Deal and Sandwich).

And of course the town is all about the beach. Miles and miles of medium sized rocks that have to be hard on the feet. People actually swim in the channel (the water is slightly warmer than the puget sound) and the “beach” is more of a rock pile but it’s still beautiful. We enjoy Brighton and will probably return someday (it’s been seven years since we were last here). It’s a noisy, diverse, tolerant, foodie, crass, touristy city that’s just plain fun to visit.
