More food

One more(?) post about Brighton food. This time reviewing two restaurants (and a tourist trap - see last paragraph): The Flinthouse and Burnt Orange. I should mention that during our visit to Brighton we’ve sat at the bar/counter overlooking the Kitchen (except for Tutto). The difference were startling. 64 degrees was zen incarnate with the chef gracefully guiding his team in creative meal prep in an immaculately clean environment. Flinthouse (see below) was chaos and crumbs with the staff looking unhappy and stressed. Burnt Orange was more serene but you could see there was a formula to it (probably the mark of a profitable restaurant), the chef here kept the attitude light but was faced with the reality of churning our lots of food quickly.

Flinthouse

Fran: 6/10. Ken 6/10

A nice shared plate restaurant. The kitchen was chaotic and messy. Food - Ok but not something I’d go back for. To be frank, I can’t remember what we ate without going back to the menu. So to save time here’s an image with our choices highlighted - click on the images to enbiggen.

Burnt Orange

Shared plates are a thing here (and it’s great). Same score from both of us 6/10 - which isn’t terrible but this is what I’d give most restaurants we go to (A-Town maybe a 7/10, Nell-Thorne 6 or 7/10). Same thing here - similar menu to Flinthouse. Lacked imagination and execution was so so. Kitchen was better organized and a bit more peaceful but no 64 degrees (which I gave a 9/10 and Fran a 10/10 - I say you can always improve).

Tonight we hit an Argentinian steakhouse. May let you know if it’s anything special. I write about the above because both are mentioned in the snooty Michelin guide to great restaurants. I think the guide has lost some credibility.

One quick warning to my future self (or anyone who follows this) - we went to this place in the Lanes for Tapas (see picture below). A word of warning - Just Don’t. Overcooked poorly prepared by people who had no passion for what they do. Just a tourist trap. 2/10 because the Albondigas (meatballs) were edible despite the sauce tasting like raw tomato paste. I really wanted to like it cause I love Tapas (and shared plates!). Sigh - at least it wasn’t in the Michelin guide (they retain a bit of credibility).
