The city itself is pretty but, as I previously wrote, touristy. A short walk off the Corso Italia (the main street running through the town bisected by Piazza Tasso) you will find some interesting sights (though again non touristy restaurants seem in short supply). This is the bay of Naples and Sorrento coastline. The town is built on cliffs and bisected (again at Piazza Tasso) but a giant fissure.
A cute story – Fran and I headed down an alley to look at one of the hotels we didn’t stay in (we collect notes in case there is a next time). Just at the hotel lobby entrance there was one of a thousand like shops selling the memento's of Sorrento (mostly lemon products and inlaid woodwork). The shop keeper, encouraged by Fran’s browsing, looked at her, looked at me, looked at her, and finally looked at me and asked in half English/half Italian if I was Italian. I said (in my poor excuse for Italian) my mother was Italian. She said “si si si, it’s in you face” making a circular motion around her face with her hand. She then proceeded to offer us the “Italian’s only discount” on all her merchandise. We didn’t buy anything but I got to practice my Italian and she her salesmanship. Shrewd lady.
Beautiful coast line! Laughing at the shrewd Italian lady!
