Final Thoughts on Forte di Marmi

I’ve talked before about a vacation from vacation: https://disbrowstravel.blogspot.com/2011/10/vacation-from-vacation.html. To me Forte di Marmi was this opportunity but I’m not sure I was ready.

The town, in May at least, is lazy and empty. I can see it will fill soon with vacationers from all over Europe. Clean beaches with cabanas, lot’s of seafood restaurants, and good biking paths but not much in terms of architecture or Italian culture (there is the Marble Fort it’s named after).

Fran liked the town and our hotel (Villa Grey). I’m ambivalent about both. Wouldn’t recommend it unless you were looking to sit on the beach and be pampered for a few days. The hotel is nice but not the nicest we’ve had. It does have a Michelin restaurant that they are, understandably, proud of. We didn’t eat there because, with my shellfish allergy, my choices were very limited…and we really weren’t looking for this trip to be a gastronomic adventure.

Final words. Would recommend if you are looking to relax on a beach, but I have Kauai for that. Otherwise I’d skip the town. Villa Grey is nice but I’d look into the Grand Imperial (closer too town) if there is a next time.
