Two dinners in Malton and a Visit to the Library

We had two great dinners in Malton, it could truly be the food capitol of Yorkshire.

First 0mni (zomnie?). This was an odd pub-like place in sort of a strip mall. They did have cask beers (I got a sampler of all three) and hard drinks, Fran got a blackberry Pimms cup (see below)

The deal is the pub offers a bunch of small plates. We got a teriyaki chicken, beef fat fries (soho much better than fries cooked in oil), a bit of steak, cauliflower cheese croquettes, slow cooked beef cheek (yum), and a cheese board.

Next dinner was a a place call Uovo (egg in Italian). This is a fine dining place and we went for the 7 course chef’s tasting menu with wine paring. Expensive but worth it. Not quite the standard of some previous restaurants (portions were too large for a 7 course meal, my halibut was over cooked, service was good but needs work, and the menu was inventive but not distinctive) but a solid 8/10. Would recommend and go again - we got to meet the Chef (David Tait) and I think this place is only going to improve. They’ve only been in the place for a few months.

Last we went to the library. We’ll OK it’s a secret bar that you’ve got to really want to find. They don’t have a phone number, don’t list an address etc. Think I’m kidding? Google “The Library Malton” and you’ll get about as much as they display. We stumbled by and I recognized it from others discussing the place. The library is so named because every time the owner’s grandfather popped out for a drink he said he was “off to the library.”
The Library
The entrance is through a whisky shop, but you have to know the secret to get in (Fortunately Fran did). Like most libraries, the secret lies in it’s books.
Then up a windy flight of stairs
To your final reward
Great fun figuring it out (kind of an escape room in reverse) and a great place. For a price (a drink at the library) I’ll tell you the secrets!

All great finds in a town I underestimated. Well, I underestimated the food/drink scene, Fran wasn’t impressed with the shopping.
